During this expert tour, Christophe Lanzenberg and Joanna Zielinska offer an in-depth view of Nicola L.’s work.
Christophe Lanzenberg, the eldest of Nicola L.’s two sons, spent his youth close to his mother and followed her to the hippie island of Ibiza and to vibrant New York in the 1980s. As a teenager, Christophe filmed several of Nicola’s films. Today he is a filmmaker in Hollywood. During this tour, he recalls his mother, her playfulness and her sense of humour. He is joined by Joanna Zielinska, Senior Curator at M HKA and curator of the exhibition. She has researched Nicola’s multifaceted artistic practice in depth, delving into her archive and rich memoirs.

During this expert tour, curator and philosopher Géraldine Gourbe offers an in-depth perspective on Nicola L.’s work.

Collectivity was central to Nicola L.’s work and life. Her apartment in the legendary Chelsea Hotel in New York was a place where friends and family came together, where dinners and parties were constantly held, and where art was deeply embedded in daily life.

During this tour, Géraldine Gourbe takes you into the lively network of artists, performers and thinkers with whom Nicola surrounded herself — from Carolee Schneemann and ORLAN to Grace Jones. She also explains how these connections helped shape Nicola’s practice.

Géraldine Gourbe is a curator and philosopher. She curated Chelsea Girl (2025), a solo exhibition of Nicola L.’s work at Frac Bretagne.

On Saturday 10 October 2026, De Cinema presents Nicola L.: The Doors Ajar at the Chelsea Hotel, a one-off screening in the framework of the exhibition Nicola L. — When the Earth Turned the Other Way at Muhka.

The screening will be introduced by M HKA curator Joanna Zielińska. The screening is free upon reservation.

Expert tour with Annosh Urbanke

During this expert tour, Muhka researcher Annosh Urbanke offers an in-depth view of the connection between Nicola L. and Belgium.
Guided tour
Nicola L. had a strong connection with Belgium, partly because her husband Fred Lanzenberg had a gallery in Brussels. She took part in several important group exhibitions and exhibitions in Belgium. Her largest solo exhibition to date was held in 1976 at the ICC (International Cultural Centre) in Antwerp, the predecessor of today’s M HKA.

M HKA's researcher Annosh Urbanke delved into the Belgian archives and brings stories and anecdotes about Nicola’s period in Belgium.

Philosophical café

A philosophical café on collectivity, freedom and the body, in the context of Nicola L. — When the Earth Turned the Other Way.

How can we ‘step into a shared skin’ and form one body together? And what does this mean for each of us? On Sunday 18 October, we will discuss these questions on the sixth floor.

The activity is free with a valid museum ticket. Advance booking is recommended.

Nicola L. invites us to reflect on how we can be free, equal and collective. Together, we will discuss these questions. Philosopher and theatre-maker Gideon Hakker moderates the conversation.
